2009 saw two riders taken to hospital after a dog ran out on a group they were in on the Tom Simpson Ride March 1st 2009.
Pete Ryalls suffered head injuries and broken collarbone while Steve Howes sustained a shattered collarbone in multiple place with a piece coming through his shoulder. Surgery took out the extrusion piece with which the gap left was bridged by metalwork.
Court proceeding were taken out against the dog owners on 2 accounts...the animals act and negligence.
The court awarded the case to Pete and Steve on the animals act based on the animal - a hunting was allowed to act in a way to cause injury to cyclists. Currently settlement is under discussion BUT paves the way for a fist in court to rule and award a case based on the animals act and makes case/court history.
Be careful out there.
