In ancient India, it wasn’t uncommon for a woman to have ten or more children and still live long enough to be a great grandmother. There’s a reason that India has become one of the most populated countries in the world and some say the secret is in the food. Indians have a number of healing foods that have traditionally been given to women who have just given birth to help their bodies recover.
These postnatal, or post-partum, foods are rich in iron to help mothers who have just lost a lot of blood, and rich in calcium which is much needed for nursing mothers. Indians believe that these foods will aid the body in recovering from childbirth faster.
Some post-partum Indian dishes
Here is a list of some of India’s more popular postnatal dishes.
Ghee, or clarified butter, is believed to help wound heal faster while providing an extra boost of energy for the mother
Fenugreek leaves help the mother to replenish many of the nutrients she has lost during childbirth such as iron and Vitamin K
Guava is the fruit of choice of fruit when it comes to postnatal food. It’s readily available and also rich in iron
Milk and other dairy products provide mothers with much needed proteins and calcium
Gourds help balance out hormone levels after child birth
Nuts and dried fruits are useful for providing mothers with good cholesterol and Vitamin E
Drumsticks (the vegetable not chicken) helps rebuild a mother’s immune system and fight off infection
Eggs provide mothers with calcium, proteins, and much needed fats
Spinach gives mothers iron, calcium, Vitamin K, and vitamin A, to name a few
Beetroot is rich in nutrients like iron and beta-carotenes
So if you’ve recently given birth, treat yourself to some of these traditional Indian healing foods.
